The World Before Words

There once was a time when there were no words.

No speech. No language. No alphabets. No vocabularies.

In our most primal state as human beings, we were incapable of conversing, not only with one another but with ourselves.

I know it’s hard to imagine, but there was a time when the ongoing, internal chattering that seems to consume so much of our thought-life as modern Homo Sapiens was simply not there.

What we “thought” in the most primitive stages of our journey as the human race was likely nothing more than a mixture of images and emotions evoked by the sights and sounds of our natural world.

Thoughts without words.

Now there’s a thought.

Amazingly, that world still exists. The world without words. The world before words. We call it nature, and it is our home.

It’s a place full of sensory delights in which infinite creativity and beauty flourish, a world in which communication does indeed take place, but in unintelligible impulses of light, sound, gesture, and instinct.

When we immerse ourselves in that world and tune into its rhythm, we can turn down the volume on the internal muttering in our minds and allow our souls the chance to reconnect with our Source.

This is a place where our spirits soar. Here we can sing in the timeless tongues of angels, in the language of the Spirit, before the words of men, and be free from the relentless need to understand or be understood. Here we can simply be.

Nature truly is a healing haven, a sanctuary for wandering, word-weary souls.

Enter in and find your rest. Be still and know that God is near.
